Following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah and the subsequent flooding, the Wellampitiya area in the Colombo District was severely affected, leaving many families displaced and deprived of their basic household belongings. As part of the ongoing recovery and rehabilitation efforts to help affected communities rebuild their daily lives, essential cooking equipment is being distributed in several phases, based on urgent needs.
Â
Accordingly, on the 24th, under the coordination of the Management Committee of the Brandiyawatta Jummah Masjid, Wellampitiya, the Association of Muslim Youth of Sailan (AMYS) distributed gas cookers to 80 flood-affected families representing all communities residing within the Masjid’s vicinity.
Â
This humanitarian initiative was generously donated by the Sri Lankan Islamic Center of Connecticut (SLICCT). The programme forms part of AMYS’s broader Recovery Strategy, aimed at restoring dignity and normalcy to families whose livelihoods were disrupted by the floods. Photographs taken during the distribution programme are presented below.
